CALL FOR PAPERS

Submission Guidelines | Graduate and Undergraduate Essay Prizes | Panels and Workshops
Conference Location | Important Dates | Lodging and Travel Information

This is a call for papers for the 2002 South Carolina Society for Philosophy (SCSP) meeting, to be hosted by the College of Charleston Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. This will be a joint meeting with the North Carolina Philosophy Society.

Papers on any philosophical topic (ethics, politics, religion, science, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, language, etc.) are welcome. Papers should be designed for a presentation time of twenty minutes (about ten pages.) There may be some special sessions with invited speakers, but the bulk of the sessions will be based on submitted papers. Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees.

Submission Guidelines

Papers should be no more than 10 double-spaced pages in length, prepared with one inch margins, and typed in a standard font. Authors should be prepared to present their papers in time-slots of approximately 20 minutes (with a further 10 minutes allotted for questions after the paper presentation). A cover page should be attached to submissions, with the following information: title, an abstract of 150–300 words, author name(s), affiliation, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. Graduates and undergraduates who wish their papers to be considered for an award (see below) should say so explicitly on their cover page. Copies of the paper (hard copy or by e-mail) should be sent to the Program Chair, to arrive no later than January 15, 2002:

2002 Program Chair, SCSP
Department of Philosophy and Religion

nrauhut@coastal.edu

Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees. Authors will be notified of acceptances no later than February 1, 2002. For notification purposes, be sure to provide your e-mail address in addition to your return surface-mail address.

Authors whose papers have been accepted should send .html or .pdf versions of those papers as virus-free e-mail attachments to Tom Burke (burke@sc.edu) as soon as possible. The program posted on the SCSP web site will include links to these papers, to be regarded as working drafts with an open invitation for comments and criticisms.

Graduate & Undergraduate Essay Prizes

Prizes will be awarded for the best papers authored by a graduate student and an undergraduate student. These winning papers will be included on the program for the annual meeting. Other student papers, in addition to the prize-winners, may also be included on the program. Submissions from students are very strongly encouraged. Those who teach promising students are asked please to encourage submissions from these students. Papers submitted for consideration for an award will be judged by two referees who are not from the student's institution.

Panels and Workshops

In addition to submitted papers, we invite proposals for special sessions, with invited speakers, on topics that may be of interest to SCSP members and/or on topics that are especially current. It would also be good to continue the tradition of having a round-table discussion on a topic of professional interest to members. (In the past we have had round-table discussions devoted to various teaching-related matters, and to the issue of philosophy in the public forum). We would very much appreciate suggestions from SCSP members. Proposals for special sessions and workshops should be sent to the Program Chair by December 15. Proposals should specify issues to be discussed, format (including time to be allotted: 20, 40, or 60 minutes), names of presenters, and should include abstracts of presentations. These proposals may involve speakers from South Carolina, or colleagues from outside of South Carolina who would be willing to attend the meetings at their own expense. Unfortunately, the SCSP does not have funds to cover speaker expenses.

This year we are planning three informal discussion sessions. If you do not want to submit a paper but have an interest in participating in any of the following discussion topics, contact Nils Rauhut (contact information given above). The topics of the planned sessions are:
    (1) "What are Students Learning in Introductory Philosophy Classes?"
    (2) "To Understand All Is To Forgive All? A Conversation about September 11."
    (3) Session on Philosophy of Biology (contact Kelly C. Smith, kcs@clemson.edu for further information).

Conference Location and Registration

Information on registration and other such details will be posted here as it becomes available. Here is what we have so far. The registration fee is $15, to be paid on-site when you register (cash or checks payable to the South Carolina Society for Philosophy). The banquet charge is $25 per person, with salmon, chicken, and vegetarian menus available. If you have not yet done so, contact Hugh Wilder (wilderh@cofc.edu) by Tuesday evening, February 5, to reserve a spot at the banquet (and to specify which entre you prefer).

The meetings will be held in the Lightsey Conference Center on the campus of the College of Charleston. The Conference Center is located on Calhoun Street between St. Phillip Street and King Street.

Free parking will be available in a College lot on Saturday only. Directions to the lot will be announced at the meeting on Friday. The best parking Friday is in a public City lot around the corner from the Conference Center. There is no discount for conference attendees but the rates are reasonable. The lot entrance is on the west side of King Street just north of the Francis Marion Hotel, which itself is at the northwest corner of King and Calhoun Streets.

Lodging: We have reserved blocks of rooms in two hotels. You should make your reservations soon.

The closer of the two hotels we are using is the Holiday Inn-Historic District, located at the corner of Meeting and Calhoun Streets, 1.5 blocks from the Conference Center. The room rate at the Holiday Inn is $115 per night, single or double occupancy (with an additional $8 per day parking charge). The hotel's local phone number is 843-805-7900.

The second hotel is the Charleston Riverview/Radisson, 1700 Lockwood Drive (843-723-3000), with a room rate of $69 per night, single or double occupancy, including breakfast and free parking. The Riverview is located 10 or so blocks from the Conference Center (not within walking distance), and the room rate includes a free pass on the city shuttle bus service (which offers daytime service to the Conference Center and downtown area). (From the Conference Center: Go 8-10 blocks west on Calhoun; turn right onto Lockwood and go a couple or three lights up to 1700 Lockwood. Or going the other way: Turn left out of the hotel parking lot; go three lights south on Lockwood; turn left at the third light onto Calhoun; go 8-10 blocks east on Calhoun to King Street.)
