This is the first call for papers for the South Carolina Society for Philosophy (SCSP) meeting which is to be held in Clemson on February 19-21, 1999.

There will be some special sessions with invited speakers, but the bulk of the sessions will be based on submitted papers. Note that there will not be any parallel sessions in 1999, as there were for the joint meeting with the North Carolina Philosophical Society in 1998. Papers in any area of philosophy are welcome. Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees. Authors will be notified of acceptances no later than January 31, 1999.

Submission Guidelines

Papers should be no more than 12 double-spaced pages in length, prepared with one inch margins, and typed in a standard font. Authors should be prepared to present their papers in time-slots of approximately 30 minutes (with a further 10 minutes allotted for questions after the paper presentation). A cover page should be attached to submissions, with the following information: title, an abstract of 300 words, author's name(s), affiliation, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. Graduates and undergraduates who wish their papers to be considered for an award (see below) should say so explicitly on their cover page. Two hard copies of the paper should be sent to the Program Chair, to arrive no later than January 15, 1999:

Anne Bezuidenhout
1999 Program Chair, SCSP
Department of Philosophy
University of South Carolina
Columbia, SC 29208

Graduate & Undergraduate Essay Prizes

As usual, awards will be given to the best undergraduate paper, and to the best graduate paper. These papers will also be included on the program for the Clemson meeting of the SCSP. It is possible that other student papers, in addition to the prize-winning ones, will be included on the program. Submissions from students are very strongly encouraged. Those who teach promising students are asked please to encourage submissions from these students. Papers submitted for consideration for an award will be judged by two referees who are not from the Department of Philosophy at USC-Columbia.

Special Sessions

In addition to submitted papers, there are plans to have one or two special sessions, with invited speakers, on topics that may be of special interest to members, or on topics that are especially current. And it would be good to continue the tradition of having some sort of round-table discussion on a topic of professional interest to members. (In the past we have had round-table discussions devoted to various teaching-related matters, and to the issue of philosophy in the public forum). The Program Chair has some ideas for such special sessions, but would very much appreciate input from members on this matter. Proposals for invited sessions and workshops should be sent to the Conference Chair by October 15, 1998. These proposals should involve speakers from South Carolina, or colleagues from the South Eastern region who would be willing to attend the meetings at their own expense. Unfortunately, the SCSP does not have funds to cover speaker expenses.

Conference Location

(Thanks to Steve Satris for this description. Steve will be responsible for making local arrangements)

The conference will be held at the Outdoor Laboratory. The Outdoor Laboratory is located in a rustic setting on Lake Hartwell, about five miles from the Clemson campus. It includes cabins and a conference room. The atmosphere is decidedly woodsy, but the cabins themselves are heated and carpeted. Meetings held here in the natural environment of the Outdoor Laboratory present a marked contrast with those held at more formal or impersonal venues. Opportunities for tree-hugging are great, and although the practice is encouraged by some people, it is not absolutely required.

SCSP E-mail List

There is an electronic discussion list for SCSP members. If you are not already signed up to this list, please consider signing up as soon as possible. (Why not right away, as soon as you have finished reading this notice? It takes just a minute or two to do so.). We will continue to do regular mailings to members, but it will be convenient to send out information about the upcoming meeting over the electronic list, especially as the date for the meeting comes closer. There may be last-minute information that we need to get to people who are planning to attend the meeting.

To subscribe to this list, send an e-mail message to listserv@vm.sc.edu with the following line typed in the body of the message

SUBSCRIBE SCSPLIST yourfirstname yourlastname

As a simple security measure, you will quickly receive an e-mail message asking you to reply with a simple "ok" in the body of the message, confirming your request to join the list. You will then be notified that you are subscribed to the list. You will also receive a standard USC listserv message with instructions on how e-mail lists work (how to post messages to the list; how to remove your name from the list, should you wish to do so at some later point; etc.).
