Lodging Arrangements, Meals and Costs:

This year we will be holding the annual meetings at Clemson University's Outdoor Lab, in a rustic setting by a lake, surrounded by trees. This is several miles away from the main campus of Clemson and the bright lights and big city of Clemson. Arrangements have to be somewhat different from those you might be used to.

We will be staying in cabins located on the site—although these are not like the cabins you may remember from summer camp. Each cabin has two full baths and a carpeted floor. Each cabin is heated. The cabins sleep up to five adults each. (There are no bunkbeds. There are ten beds in all, but unlike summer camp, at least five of these ten will remain empty). The Outdoor Lab will supply each person with "linen"—a blanket, a pillow, a pillow case, 2 wash cloths, 2 towels, and 2 sheets. (These are kept for the duration of one's stay at the Outdoor Lab.)

The cost for two nights in the cabin plus linen is $47.42. It is also possible to forego the linen and bring one's own sleeping bag and then the cost would be $35.97 for two nights. The one-night rates are $29.43 with linen and $17.99 without.

The meals, reception, banquet, etc., are all held at the Outdoor Lab.

The meals that will be supplied are:

  • Friday night: reception
  • Saturday: breakfast, mid-morning coffee break, lunch, mid-afternoon coffee break, banquet
  • Sunday: breakfast.

All of the above come to $50.35. (This might sound like a lot all at once, but remember that this amount covers several functions and meals.)

Directions to the Conference Site:

Coming up from the south take I-26 North. When the highway forks (about 60 or 70 miles north of Columbia) take the left fork, I-385, which is marked by a sign for Greenville. Don't go all the way to Greenville though. Take I-85 South (toward Atlanta) at the interchange. Take exit 19B onto Hwy 76/28; now you're going toward Clemson and Pendleton. Follow that highway about 8 or 9 miles. You will pass Tri-County Technical College on the right. (You can see some low buildings, flags, and parking areas.) Tri-County Tech is on the top of a hill; the highway you're on then goes pretty steeply downhill and at the bottom of the hill is a sign for the Outdoor Lab. You turn left here. Follow this road and the signs for the Outdoor Lab for 3 miles. Don't make any turns to other things (such as the T. Ed Garrison Livestock Arenaa useful landmark because of its orange-red roofs—or the "superintendent's house"). Just follow this road and the signs for the Outdoor Lab; eventually, the last part of the drive is on a narrow, windy road (speed limit 15 mph), and that road ends up right in the parking lot of the Outdoor Lab. The large building there is Kresge Hall, where registration and all meals and papers will be. Very nearby is a group of cabins ("Camp Sertoma") where we will stay.

If you're coming from Greenville or Spartanburg, you could simply follow the directions starting with I-85 South. It may be possible to take Hwy 123 all the way from Greenville or to start out on I-85 and then take a short-cut through Powdersville and Easley, but unless you're sure about what you are doing, and you're OK with approaching the turn-off for the Outdoor Lab from the other direction on Hwy 76/28 (where you won't have Tri-County Tech as a landmark), I would not advise it.

The phone number of the office at the Outdoor Lab is (864) 646-7502. Clemson University information is (864) 656-3311. Here is a map of the Clemson area.
