Lodging and Travel Information
This is a call for papers for the 2001 South Carolina Society for
Philosophy (SCSP) meeting, to be hosted by the Coastal Carolina University
Department of Philosophy and Religion.
Papers on any philosophical topic (ethics, politics, religion, science,
logic, metaphysics, epistemology, language, etc.) are welcome. Papers
should be designed for a presentation time of twenty minutes (about ten
pages.) There may be some special sessions with invited speakers, but the
bulk of the sessions will be based on submitted papers. Papers will be
reviewed by the program chair and two other referees.
Papers should be no more than 10 double-spaced pages in length, prepared
with one inch margins, and typed in a standard font. Authors should be
prepared to present their papers in time-slots of approximately 20 minutes
(with a further 10 minutes allotted for questions after the paper
presentation). A cover page should be attached to submissions, with the
following information: title, an abstract of 150--300 words, author
name(s), affiliation, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail
address. Graduates and undergraduates who wish their papers to be
considered for an award (see below) should say so explicitly on their cover
page. Two hard copies of the paper should be sent to the Program Chair, to
arrive no later than January 25, 2001:
Tom Burke
2001 Program Chair, SCSP
Department of Philosophy
USCColumbia
Columbia, SC 29208
Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees.
Authors will be notified of acceptances no later than February 12,
2001. For notification purposes, be sure to provide your e-mail
address in addition to your return surface-mail address.
Prizes will be awarded for the best papers authored by a graduate student
and an undergraduate student. If you fall into one of these categories,
please submit three copies of your paper together with a 150--300 word
abstract. Other student papers, in addition to the prize-winners, may
be included on the program. Submissions from students are very strongly
encouraged. Those who teach promising students are asked please to
encourage submissions from these students. Papers submitted for
consideration for an award will be judged by two referees who are not from
the student's institution.
In addition to submitted papers, we invite proposals for special sessions,
with invited speakers, on topics that may be of interest to SCSP members
and/or on topics that are especially current. It would also be good to
continue the tradition of having a round-table discussion on a topic of
professional interest to members. (In the past we have had round-table
discussions devoted to various teaching-related matters, and to the issue
of philosophy in the public forum). We would very much appreciate
suggestions from SCSP members. Proposals for special sessions and workshops
should be sent to the Program Chair by December 15. Proposals should
specify issues to be discussed, format (including time to be allotted: 20,
40, or 60 minutes), names of presenters, and should include abstracts of
presentations. These proposals may involve speakers from South Carolina,
or colleagues from outside of South Carolina who would be willing to attend
the meetings at their own expense. Unfortunately, the SCSP does not have
funds to cover speaker expenses.
The conference will be held at Myrtle Beach (just down the road from
Conway). Registration will be on-site on the first day of the conference,
though you will need to reserve a hotel room earlier if you intend to stay
at the conference hotel (see below). Details will be posted here as they
become available. Here's what we know so far:
Lodging: Rooms will be available at the conference site:
Springmaid Beach Conference Center
P.O. Box 423
Myrtle Beach, SC 29578
Reservations: The Conference Center (on the Grand Strand, at the south
end of Ocean Boulevard) has reserved a block of rooms at $57 a night,
single or double. Registrants must make their own reservations. You must
do so early (by January 31, 2001).
Folks on the SCSP mailing list (not to be confused with the e-mail list)
will receive a room-reservation form by surface mail. (Send your postal
mail address to Tom Burke (burke@sc.edu) if you want to be on this list.)
You may also call the conference center at 1-800-770-7198 and tell them you
are with the "philosophy" conference on March 2-4. They will send you
a room-reservation form. Apparently room reservations by phone are not
an option, but you can request that they fax or mail the reservation form
to you.
Location: Springmaid Beach is located at 3200 Springmaid Boulevard, just
off South Ocean Boulevard, in Myrtle Beach, SC, a quarter mile across from
the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The main Registration Office is on
the right side of the road as you enter into the Springmaid Beach complex,
just past the parking garage and miniature golf course.
Here is a map of
the Springmaid Beach Conference Center complex.
Maps of the Myrtle Beach area can be viewed at MapQuest.
You will need to supply the conference center's street address (3200 Springmaid
Boulevard / Myrtle Beach / SC / 29578) to view appropriate maps.
The Conference Center: Both the meeting room and banquet room are in
the Conference Center, just north of the tower building where our hotel
rooms are. The meeting room is on the third floor.
There will be a table just outside the meeting room for use during
registration. There is a nice ocean view from corridors off our meeting
room which we can use during breaks. The cafeteria is adjacent to the
south of the Conference Center. Registered participants will be given
tickets for breakfast in the cafeteria on Saturday morning. A list of
nearby restaurants will be provided for "on your own" dinner Friday and
lunch on Saturday. The Springmaid cafeteria will also be available at
those times on a cash basis.

Paper submission deadline: January 25, 2001
Room reservations: January 31, 2001
