CALL FOR PAPERS

This is a call for papers for the 2009 South Carolina Society for Philosophy (SCSP) meeting, to be hosted by the Withrop University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Papers on any philosophical topic (ethics, politics, religion, science, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, language, etc.) are solicited for the upcoming annual SCSP meeting. Submissions from students are very strongly encouraged. Papers should be designed for a presentation time of twenty to thirty minutes (ten or fifteen double-spaced pages.) Papers will be reviewed by the program chair and two other referees.

STUDENT ESSAY PRIZES

Prizes ($50) will be awarded for the best papers authored by a South Carolina graduate student and by a South Carolina undergraduate student. These winning papers will be included on the program for the annual meeting. Other student papers, in addition to the prize-winners, may also be included on the program. Papers submitted for consideration for an award will be judged by two referees who are not from the student's institution.

Submission Guidelines

Papers should be 10-15 double-spaced pages in length, prepared with one-inch margins, and typed in a standard 12-pt font. Authors must be prepared to present their papers in time-slots of approximately 20–30 minutes (with a further 15 minutes allotted for questions after the paper presentation). A cover page should be attached to submissions, with the following information: title, an abstract of 150–300 words, author's name, affiliation, complete mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. Students who want their papers to be considered for an award must state this explicitly on their cover page.

Two hard copies of the paper and cover page, suitable for blind review, should be sent to the Program Chair, to arrive no later than January 4:

The South Carolina Society for Philosophy was founded to serve the interests and needs of philosophy students and professionals around the State of South Carolina. We meet once a year, generally sometime in February or early March, at various universities or colleges around the state (usually rotating the meeting location from year to year among coastal, midlands, and upstate campuses). At this yearly conference, there are usually some special sessions with invited speakers, but the bulk of the sessions are based on submitted papers. There are no annual dues, but members pay a registration fee to attend the annual meeting. Recently we have been holding joint meetings every other year with the North Carolina Philosophical Society, alternating meetings between South Carolina and North Carolina locations.
