Professional Placement Services

Placement support offered to graduate students involves two types of services.  First, the University, principally through the Career Center and faculty, assists students in their placement search for professional internships and careers.  Second, the graduate program offers departmental placement assistance for academic careers.  These services have contributed to the success of graduates in finding positions in major colleges and universities; the Foreign Service and numerous other governmental agencies; international organizations and private voluntary organizations; private industry and international banks; and research consulting firms specializing in international affairs.  Students are expected to take the initiative to become informed about placement services and professional opportunities long before they complete their program.

The departmental placement services are headed up by the Placement Director in the Department of Political Science who focuses on the Ph.D. recipient intending an academic career.  The Placement Director assists graduate students nearing the end of their doctoral studies in the job search by performing a range of tasks from identifying academic positions to developing a student's curriculum vita and application packages to arranging practice job interviews and research presentations.  In addition, the Department usually covers the copying and mailing costs involved in submitting applications for the positions Ph.D. students are seeking.

Some of the locations where recent graduates have received placement include, but are not limited to Appalachian State University, Baylor University, Davidson College in North Carolina, the University of Connecticut, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, Louisiana State University, Loyola University of Chicago, Michigan State University, the University of Montana, the University of Memphis, Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, Western Michigan University, and the University of Puget Sound in Washington.  International placements have included the American University in Bulgaria, the American University in Cairo, Limerick University in Ireland, and the University of Nairobi in Kenya.  Information about recent Ph.D. recipients and current Ph.D. candidates currently on the market can be found here.

Questions about our placement services can be directed to our Placement Director, Dr. Thomas Hansford.  His contact information is below.
