- Description of the Psychological Services Center
The Psychological Services Center (PSC) is a service, training, and research
facility of the Psychology Department at the University of South Carolina. The
PSC is a non-profit facility established in 1965 in order to provide assessment
and treatment services to the University of South Carolina community and the
Columbia Metropolitan area.
- Location of Center
The PSC is located at 2221 Devine Street, Suite 100. Parking for clients is available.
- Making Appointments
Appointments may be made by calling 734-0378 and speaking to a clinic assistant. Appointments are scheduled from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Friday. Appointments are typically offered once a week for 50 minute sessions.
- Clients of the Center
Many people use the PSC each year. Among them are individuals and couples having problems in their personal and social life and in their school or work setting. Also parents and families with specific individual or family problems use services at PSC.
- Types of services offered
The PSC offers psychotherapy and behavioral interventions for children,
adolescents, and adults to help them deal more effectively in academic, work,
family, and other social situations. Therapy services for children are typically done in the context of family therapy involving both parents and children in the process. Psychological evaluations and related services for adults and children are available on a limited basis. Group therapy is also offered for some individuals.
For the fall 2007 semester, a relationships group (i.e., for individuals hoping to work on interpersonal goals), a childhood sexual abuse survivors group, and an eating disorder and body image group are being run at the clinic.
The PSC does not offer learning disability testing services (for example, ADHD, ADD) for children or adults. Testing services are available at Sand Hills Academy (695-1400), the Developmental Pediatric Clinic (935-5343), and
the Educational Services Clinic (777-6550), among other community resources.
- Therapists
The treatment staff is composed of Doctoral Candidates in Clinical-Community
Psychology at USC. The staff is supervised on all cases by Ph.D.s who are faculty of the USC Psychology Department.
