Admissions Criteria
Each year there are approximately 50 applicants of which 5-6 are admitted to the Ph.D. program. Approximately 90 percent
of applicants who are given an offer of admission choose to come to USC. Less than 5 percent of enrolled students choose
not to complete their program.
It is impossible to give any criteria which, when met, will guarantee an applicant admission to the School Psychology Training
Program. Each group of applicants competes against other students applying that year.
The following sources of information are considered in making admission decisions:
- Undergraduate GPA
- Graduate GPA (if applicable)
- Verbal and Quantitative GRE scores (Psych GREs preferred, but not required)
- Previous experience in research and independent studies
- Prior experience in applied settings
- Grades in psychology courses
- 3 Letters of recommendation
- Supplementary Information Sheet. To download the Supplementary Information Sheet, click on either pdf file format or Word file format.
For informational purposes, in recent years students who have entered the program have had average
undergraduate GPAs of 3.5 and mean GRE (Verbal and Quantitative) scores of 1190.
During a designated "interview day" in February, applicants are invited to come to the
University to meet the faculty and students currently in the program. This provides an excellent opportunity
for applicants to acquaint themselves with program faculty and students and ask questions about the program.
Additionally, applicants can learn about training opportunities, program resources, funding options, etc, which
will enable applicants to better evaluate the program. Applicants invited to interview day should attend if at
all possible, although it is recognized that some applicants will not be able to attend. No applicant will be
denied admission because of missing an interview day. An invitation to an interview in no way guarantees acceptance
into the program.
There currently are 35 students in the school psychology program. Eighty-five percent of the students
are female. Nearly ten percent of the students are from minority groups.
