PSG Winter/Spring Calendar
PREVENTION SCIENCE GROUP
The Prevention Science Group was created by Psychology Department faculty to provide a forum to discuss developments in the field and to consult and collaborate on research. Participating students and faculty members conduct studies to enhance knowledge of the prevention of psychological, emotional, or substance abuse disorders, as well as adverse outcomes related to social problems. Much of the research also seeks to promote adaptation, well-being, and resilience. An emerging theme of our discussions has been how we can use our knowledge of research, evaluation, and interventions to bridge the gap between science and practice in prevention. The PSG is an interdisciplinary group of faculty and students (e.g., psychology, criminology, education, public health, and social work) that meets weekly to present current research, hear outside speakers, and discuss emerging issues related to the field of prevention research. We seek to create an open, supportive setting where students and faculty can present formative ideas and get encouragement and guidance from their peers.
The scope of PSG meetings reflects the diversity of its members' interests and perspectives. This work includes risk/protective factor and intervention studies that are conducted and conceptualized within developmental, ecological, and cultural contexts. Research and our discussions are explicitly conceptualized at multiple levels of analysis, such as the individual, the family, the group, the organization, the service system, and the community. As a result, we review studies and interventions that are conducted in a wide range of community settings, including: clinics, schools, homes, the workplace, organizations, and neighborhoods. We encourage people to participate in PSG if they have an interest in any of the areas of research and practice that we cover. That is, individuals do not need to be experts to participate.
For the Fall Semester of 2004, we are using the theme of Health Disparities, Prevention, and Health Promotion to organize our discussion. We meet on Thursdays from 11:30-12:30 in the Walsh Conference Room on the second floor of Barnwell College.
