Requirements for a Major or a Minor Degree in Psychology
Requirements for a Major in Psychology
Psychology 101 must be completed and passed with a "C" or better for a major in psychology. While this
course does not count for major credit, Psyc 101 may be used for General Education Requirements in
Social Sciences or as a general elective. The 101 course is a prerequisite to all other psychology courses.

- All major coursework must be passed with a "C" or better.
- Psychology courses from the last 3 items above, which are passed with a grade of "D" may count as general electives, but they cannot then be repeated for major credit.
- Psychology major courses may be repeated only one time to achieve the required grade of “C”.
- Psyc 101 and 226 must be taken within the first thirty semester hours as a Psychology Major.
- You must take or place out of Math 111 before enrolling in Psyc 227.
- Psyc 226, 227, or 228 may not be taken in the same semester. These must be taken in sequence.
- PSYC 101, 226, 227 and 228 can be repeated once. If on the second attempt, the student fails to obtain a "C" or better, that student will be removed from the Psychology major.
Cultural Awareness Requirements
Students must complete the specified number of courses in each area listed below, but may use the courses to satisfy
other degree requirements (i.e., General Education, Minor or Cognate, and Elective) except where specifically restricted.
Students and their advisors should plan the Cultural Awareness Requirements carefully. Major department advisors have final
approval on courses selected to meet Cultural Awareness Requirements for their advisees as long as the course(s) include
significant attention to the subject matter as a cultural phenomenon.
- A course which examines the culture of the student's foreign language
- A North American Studies course (not HIST 111, 112)
- A course in a culture other than American or Western European
