Cheryl Rhodes has been an Adjunct Professor at USC since 2002 when taking a graduate course in film under Dr. Ed Madden. She perceived a need for students preparing to be writers to have more Biblical knowledge and first taught "The Bible for Writers". She then began developing courses using contemporary films and best-selling novels as a way to understand religion. Courses have included: Religion in Contemporary Fiction and Film; The Ten Commandments Goes to the Movies; Jesus in Film; The Bible in Contemporary Fiction and Film; World Religious Through Film; and, her favorite - The DaVinci Code. She's waiting patiently for another novel or film that will contain enough "religion" to make it worthy of academic study.
She came into the academic world following 25+ years in parish ministry and teaching in The United Methodist Church, having served churches in Virginia, Germany, and South Carolina. Although having two professional degrees (a Masters in Divinity and a Doctorate of Ministry), it was necessary to return to school and obtain a Masters in Religious Studies. Not only was this academically rewarding, it also means that although she may be old enough to be your Grandmother, she was a student until 2002!
One of her favorite things to do is to lead travel abroad study programs. She has taken groups to Germany, France, England, and Scotland.
Current projects include:
- Efforts to complete books on The Bible in Contemporary Fiction and Film and World Religions Through Film (apologies to the editors who have been waiting way too long for her submissions and may indeed have changed their minds).
- Work on a novel - The Hungerings
- Editing 2 novels that her mother wrote before her death.
While teaching part-time at USC, until Spring, 2007, Rhodes has also been filling-in for a professor at Coastal Carolina University.
