Financial Assistance and Awards
Departmental Graduate Assistantships
Students who require financial assistance for graduate study are encouraged to apply for the Graduate Assistantship positions offered by the department on a competitive basis. Financial assistance is normally offered for two academic years.
Financial assistance is provided in two forms: through stipends and tuition supplements. Stipends are offered to all Graduate Assistants; in addition, tuition supplements may be offered. The stipends and tuition supplements provide a substantial reduction in the cost of the graduate program and may also furnish additional support.
Graduate Assistants qualify for in-state tuition rates. Students receiving tuition supplements are expected to pay any difference between the scholarship amount and the in-state tuition rate. The amounts of stipends and tuition supplements vary from year to year.
To qualify for the stipend and tuition supplement, graduate students must register for a total of 9 hours per semester.
Graduate Assistants work up to twenty hours per week on departmental projects during Fall and Spring semesters. In most cases a Graduate Assistant works closely with a member of the departmental faculty as part of his/her duties. Such work often includes the preparation of materials to be used in the classroom and assistance with faculty research.
Extra-departmental Graduate Assistantships
Graduate Assistantships are also available to students through other offices and programs in the University. Students who do not receive departmental assistance, or who remain in the program longer than the usual two years, are encouraged to apply for these other Graduate assistantships. Information about them is available through the Director of Graduate Studies (see contact information).
Also, the Graduate School, in cooperation with the Graduate Student Association, has set up a Graduate Assistantship Opportunities webpage. The page will list for each position, a job title, the name of the hiring unit, the application deadline, and a link to the job description and application information: http://www.gradschool.sc.edu/support/GAship-listings.html
Teaching Opportunities
Limited teaching opportunities are available for advanced graduate students when short-term replacement positions occur within the department. All eligible enrolled graduate students (those who have completed at least 18 graduate hours in the discipline) are automatically considered for such openings when they occur. In addition, several Columbia area academic institutions regularly seek instructors on an adjunct basis. Graduate students in their second year of coursework USC are encouraged to discuss the possibility of adjunct teaching with the Director of Graduate Studies (see contact information).
Awards
The Religious Studies Department offers the Rutledge Scholar Award each year for the best paper submitted by a graduate student in Religious Studies. The call for Rutledge Scholar Award papers goes out early in the Spring Semester and the deadline for submission of papers is March 1. Papers must be written for a course in the previous 12 months and are judged by a committee of the departmental faculty.
For further information about the Rutledge Scholar Award, you may contact Kevin Lewis: 777-4522 (kevin@sc.edu )
In addition, whenever calls for papers by other University bodies, or from other institutions are received, Religious Studies graduate students are notified and encouraged to submit papers.
