Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I have already filed my Program of Study, but I need to make a change.
A. You may file a "Request for Adjustment in Graduate Program" form at any time that you need to add or delete a course from your Program of Study. Your department Administrative Assistant should have these forms in the office, or they may be found a the Graduate School website in the Forms Library
Q. I forgot to file my Application for Graduation."
A. You can submit a late application and pay the late fee ($25 per month after application is due).
Q. I'm not going to be able to meet all those deadlines, but I still want to go through commencement this semester.
A. If you are a master's candidate, you may still participate in commencement exercises and finish your work the following semester. You will not receive your diploma until you have been cleared for your degree. Don't forget to file a new Application for Graduation and register for at least 1 hour of 799 for the semester in which you are completing everything needed for graduation.
Q. I'm so close to finishing, is there any way I can avoid having to take and pay for 799 next semester?
A. As long as you complete your degree requirements and turn in your thesis before classes start for the next semester, you do not have to register for 799. However, you must have enrolled in at least 1 hour of 799 during the prior semester. Your diploma will not be issued until the next term. Make sure you file a new Application for Graduation.
Q. I won't be getting my diploma for several more months; is there a way I can verify my degree for my employer?
A. If you have completed all your degree requirements and have been cleared for graduation, a certificate with the Dean's signature and seal may be issued to you to verify your degree and date of graduation.
Q. I just realized I am still carrying an incomplete in a course I took.
A. You may not graduate with an incomplete in a course that is listed on your Program of Study. Contact your instructor immediately and find out what it will take to convert it to a grade of "C" or better.
Q. Some of my coursework is out of date.
A. Master's students have 6 years from the semester of admission to the program, to complete their degree. Any course you have taken that falls outside of that time frame must be revalidated. This is accomplished by passing an exam in that course administered by an instructor in your department and by paying a revalidation fee. The fee is $25 per credit hour and is paid to the Treasurer. The receipt for payment must be brought to the Graduate School along with the revalidation paperwork.
