Outstanding Students 2011
The Department of Religious Studies would like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding work.
Rising Senior Award:
Seth Guest was selected by the Religious Studies Faculty to receive the Rising Senior Award this year for academic excellence. Seth has been on both the President's Honor Roll and Dean's List and for his senior year is planning to study abroad in Southeast Asia. He has worked at USC's Sustainable Carolina in the Green Quad Learning Center and is next semester's Vice President for Amnesty International.
Elizabeth Dodge Clark Award:
Chris McLaughlin was nominated this year for the Elizabeth Dodge Clark book award. He also recieved an award in 2009 from the Eccumenical Council of the Carolinas which recognizes student leaders who have demonstrated respect for diverse religious traditions and are interested in supporting ecumenical or interfaith activities on their campuses. Chris was admitted into Phi Beta Kappa, honors society in 2011.
Michael J. Mungo Pre-Seminary Award:
Mark Metze was the recipient of The Mungo Scholarship in 2011. The annual award given to undergraduate students who are enrolled in a program of study in preparation for entering a religious seminary of any faith. Mark has worked at Lutheridge summer camp as a counselor and then as staff supervisor for four years. He has also been asked to serve as one of the leaders of the Lutheran Campus Ministry at USC and also to serve on the leadership team of the newly developing student organization: Society of Ancient History. He was on the Dean's list last year.
Rutledge Scholar Award:
Shannon Deer, an MA student in Religious Studies, has been teaching two to three religious studies courses at USC Aiken for the past year. She is also working on completing her thesis in order to graduate this summer. Her thesis will address the classic 3-fold mystical of path purgation, illumination and union, drawing on eastern and western mystical sources.
Student Awards Day recipients:
Lara Grantham, South Carolina Honors College student and thesis student with Dr. Roberts, won first place in the Humanities Division Oral Presentations.
Jacob Damm, double major with Religious Studies and Classics won the Robert F.W. Alston Award in Ancient Languages, as well as the Who's Who award. He also received the Arts and Humanities I award for poster presentations at Discovery Day for his presentation on "The Chronological Significance of the Archaeological Site Khirbet Qeiyafa."
Brian Mesimer, double major with Religious Studies and Philosophy, won the Josiah Morse award for achievement in philosophy, awarded to seniors. Brian is a South Carolina Honors College student and has won the Carolina Scholarship as well as a fellowship for the Fund for Theological Education in 2009, and the Mungo Pre-Seminary Scholarship in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
