Course description

This course examines the emergence and development of Islam as both a religion and a tradition. The course is structured according to the famous Hadith of Gabriel that has been used as a model for discussing the essentials of Islam for over 1000 years. It divides Islam into three dimensions: submission (Islam), faith (Iman), and virtue (Ihsan). The readings and lectures explore the basic ideals and teachings pertaining to each of these dimensions and the schools of learning that have arisen in connection with them. The purpose of the course is to provide students with an integrated understanding of the ideals and realities of Islam.
