Sociology Students at the Beijing Olympics 2008!
The
Sociology Department is pleased and proud to note that several
former and current sociology students at the 2008 Summer Olympic
games in Beijing, China.
Former Gamecock
Chelsea Hammond narrowly missed medaling in her first Olympic
appearance after placing fourth in the women's long jump final. Also
in track & field,
Aleen Bailey competed in the finals of the 4x100m.

Specialty Ranked!
In 2005, USC Sociology's graduate training
in Social Psychology was ranked among America's elite programs in U.S.
News & World Report's latest edition of America's Best
Graduate Schools. The new #12 ranking also makes it the
fastest-rising social psychology program in the nation.
The College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce the
availability of some undergraduate scholarship awards. These awards
are intended to recognize outstanding academic achievements for
undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences. Check

AWARDS & RECOGNITION
Congratulations to Shannon McDonough
Graduate student Shannon McDonough was the 1st place Winner of the
2008 SSSP Educational Problems Division's Student Paper Competition for
her paper "Safety Cultivates Fear?: The Unintended Consequences of
School Surveillance Measures." Shannon will present the paper at the
SSSP meeting in Boston.

to Naomi Kolberg, Matt Cazzessus, Kyle Irwin, and Tucker McGrimmon
At the
2008 Graduate Student Day, several sociology students were
honored! Matt Cazessus and Naomi Kolberg won the 1st place
award in the Social Sciences Poster Competition! Also,
Kyle Irwin and Tucker McGrimmon were recognized as
the winners of our departmental award for best co-authored paper.

Lala Steelman wins 2007 Outstanding Publication Award from the
ASA Aging Section Lala
Steelman, along with Brian Powell, Indiana University, and Robert M.
Carini, University of Louisville, received the 2007 Outstanding
Publication Award from the ASA section on Aging and the Life Course
for their co-authored publication, "Advancing Age, Advantaged
Youth: Parental Age and the Transmission of Resources to
Children," published in Social Forces, March 2006.

Brent
Simpson, Mathieu Deflem, Shane Thye, and David Willer received Two
Thumbs Up Awards from the Office of Student Disability Services,
University of South Carolina, 2007. Irena Stepanikova received the
S. Dornbusch Award for Social Psychology, 2006.
Congratulations to Lisa Dilks
At the Graduate Student Day of 2007, Lisa Dilks won first place
in Oral Research Presentation in the Category Humanities, Social
Sciences and Social Issues for her paper, "Influencing Economic
Theory with Sociological Assumptions: Lessons from Survivor
on Discrimination." At
the Graduate Student Day, also, Suzanne Sutphin was recognized as
the winner of our departmental award for best co-authored paper.

Congratulations
to Peter Lawrence and Kyle Irwin
Graduate
students Peter Lawrence and Kyle Irwin won the Department's award
for outstanding co-authored paper (written with faculty
member Brent Simpson). The paper is now published in Social
Psychology Quarterly. Peter Lawrence also won the outstanding
volunteer award at USC, 2003.
Pamela Emanuelson wins USC Graduate School's Outstanding
Thesis Award 2006 Doctoral
student Pamela Emanuelson in our Department won the USC Graduate
School's Outstanding Thesis Award for 2006, in the social sciences,
business, and education category. Pamela also received an award for
the Best Graduate Student Paper in Rationality and Society from the
American Sociological Association, 2005. She is the first student
from USC to receive this award. Pamela has worked primarily on
Network Exchange Theory. "Pamela is a brilliant theoretician
and one of the most promising young sociologists in the
country," said Dr. David Willer.
Congratulations to Virginia Martin, John Schutt, and Sangmoon
Kim
At the Graduate Student day of 2003, Virginia
Martin received one of only two of USC’s university-wide awards
for her dissertation, which she finished with Dr. Shelly Smith.At
the Graduate Student Day, the winners of our department awards
—John Shutt (for single-authored paper) and Sangmoon Kim (for
co-authored paper)— were also honored. Congratulations to all!
David Willer
receives the 2002 James S. Coleman Award
The
Sociology Department is pleased and proud to announce that our
colleague David Willer has received the 2002 James S. Coleman Award
from the Rationality and Society section of the American
Sociological Association. Dave received the award for his work, Network
Exchange Theory (Westport, CT: Praeger, 1999).
