VERTIGO
 |
In
recent years, no other movie of Hitchcock has received as much attention
as Vertigo (1958). I will present an evocation of Vertigo without revealing
the plot of the movie. However, I will inevitably make references to fragments
of the story line of the Hitchcock film. If you have not seen this movie
yet, you may want to skip this page.
Vertigo is a movie about
a man who falls in love with a woman, in the course of which he is drawn
into a tangled web of intrigue, betrayal, and mystery. The title Vertigo
applies to this spiral that eventually will mean downfall, degradation,
and loss.

The main title sequence
was designed by Saul
Bass. Accompanied by
Bernard
Herrmann's music ( ),
the sequence anticipates the seduction and tragedy we
are about to witness. The
title also inspired the movie's excellent posters.
