This
website accompanies Mathieu Deflem's book, Sociology of Law: Visions of
a Scholarly Tradition, published by Cambridge University Press, 2008.
The
book presents a theoretically driven and research oriented
vision
of the sociology of law on the basis of a discussion of the specialty's
major achievements. Drawing together both
theoretical
and empirical themes, the work reveals the value of the ways in which
sociologists
study the social structures and processes of law. Chapters include
discussions of classical contributions in the sociology of law, a
variety
of modern and contemporary perspectives, and a range of empirical
themes,
including the role of law in relation to
economy,
politics, culture, the legal profession, social control, and the
globalization
of law. You can read the book's Preface
for further information. |

Reviews
Symposium: Sociology of Law: Visions of a Scholarly Tradition,
by Mathieu Deflem. Pro Bono, the newsletter of the
SSSP Law & Society Division, 16(1), Spring 2010.
The next time you see a legal sociologist,
give him a reassuring hug or tell her that the field is
producing interesting and valuable work.
—Brian Tamanaha,
American Journal of
Sociology (2010)
"This
is a formidable work of sociology. Mathieu Deflem spans the spectrum of
the sociology of law neither to burry it nor to praise it." —Cary
Federman, Contemporary
Sociology (2009)
"Sociology
of Law: Visions of a Scholarly Tradition is another important
contribution
to the sociology of law, offering an approachable, well-structured
introduction
to the field for the student, and a scholarly, detailed survey for the
specialist." —Matthew Light, Canadian
Journal of Sociology (2008)
"Deflem’s
SOCIOLOGY OF LAW presents a discussion – not an exposition – of
important
theoretical problems and concerns that define the boundaries of this
field
of specialization. In this effort, Deflem applies his expertise and
meticulous
research to construct a thorough treatise on the sociology of
law."
—Dante Gatmaytan-Magno, Law
& Politics Book Review (2008)
"This
book would be an excellent core text in graduate seminars on sociology
of law and/or legal studies." —Erin Ackerman, Choice
(2009)

Advance
Reviews
‘Mathieu
Deflem's book is a most timely overview of the sociology of law. It
brings
together a vision of the classical tradition before attending to a
comprehensive
survey of recent contributions to what has become an increasingly
diversified
field. He lays the basis for a fruitful engagement between these
different
strands. Participants will be more aware of the interacting visions of
the field and will, hopefully, talk to each other again.’ —Alan
Hunt, Chancellor's Professor, Carleton University
.
‘A
most welcome immodest effort carried out with aplomb and clarity in the
best tradition of scholarship! A learned book that takes ideas and
students
seriously in demonstrating the intertwining of theory and significant
empirical
topics within a distinctly sociological perspective. Necessary reading
for anyone seeking a systematic and comprehensive introduction to the
sociology
of law.’ —Gary T. Marx, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
.
‘Mathieu
Deflem’s cross national vision, much less confined by national and
language
barriers than most work, will greatly inspire the social scientific
study
of law. His firm roots in general sociology advance insights that are
too
easily lost when new specialty areas seek refuge in niches neatly
separated
from their mother disciplines. I highly recommend this book to advanced
undergraduate students, graduate students and scholars alike.’ —Joachim
J. Savelsberg, Professor of Sociology, University of Minnesota
.
‘Until
now, all of the diverse and valuable contributions to sociology of law
have been scattered across the academic landscape. Mathieu Deflem
organizes,
synthesizes, and makes sense of them - so they can be used more
effectively
for the sociological study and understanding of law in society. If I
were
teaching a graduate seminar on the sociology of law, the first book
assigned
would be this one.’ —R.E.D. Schwartz, Senior Research Scholar,
Yale Law School
