| RESEARCH
INTERESTS
My
research interests include counter-terrorism, international policing,
sociology
of law, popular culture, sociological theory,
and the sociological profession, amongst others.
My most recent teaching
and research interests explore contemporary issues of
popular culture, especially fame and music, themes which reconnect with my initial
specialization in cultural sociology as an undergraduate
student and my educational background in cultural anthropology. In 2010, I
edited a book on
Popular Culture, Crime, and Social Control,
and since the spring semester of 2011, I have organized a course on the
sociology of the fame in the case of Lady Gaga (see
www.gagacourse.net). I have completed several
shorter writings and presentations on the fame of Lady Gaga,
and I prepare a book-length
study to explore the social conditions of the fame of Lady
Gaga in the changing world of popular music. Related
work on culture stretches from music censorship over the
movies of Alfred Hitchcock to the anthropology of Victor
Turner. See publications
page for related writings.
My
work in the area of law and social control primarily follows three
lines
of inquiry. First, I have been analyzing the
police
dimensions of counter-terrorism, especially from a comparative
and global viewpoint.
This project has resulted in various articles and is the focal point of
a new book, entitled The
Policing of Terrorism: Organizational and Global Perspectives (Routledge
2010). This study is theoretically rooted in my earlier works on
international
policing, specifically the neo-Weberian theory of bureaucratization, and is thematically situated in the criminology of terrorism
and
counter-terrorism, on which subject matter I also edited a volume, Terrorism
and Counter-Terrorism: Criminological Perspectives (2004).
Second,
in my book
Sociology
of Law: Visions of a Scholarly Tradition (Cambridge
University
Press 2008), I analyze the history and systematics of the sociology of
law to make a case for
this specialty field as a unique and valuable field of inquiry. Drawing together both theoretical and empirical themes, this
book reviews the field's major accomplishments and reveals the
value of the multiple ways in which sociologists study the
social structures and processes of law. The book is now also available in a
Chinese translation.
Third,
I have
analyzed historical
antecedents and contemporary conditions of international
police cooperation. This work culminated in a series of
articles and a book, Policing World Society, published
by Oxford University Press (2002). The study examines the history of
international
cooperation involving police institutions from the United States and
Germany
as well as other European countries in the period from the middle of
the
19th century until World War II. I develop and apply a neo-Weberian
theory
of bureaucratization to analyze the conditions of cooperation across
national
borders.
Most
of my work is of a comparative and historical nature. In this
connection
I have a special interest in international and global developments,
especially
in relation to my substantive research and teaching interests in the
areas
of law and social control. I have merged this global concern with my
interest
in the sociological profession in the form of an edited volume,
Sociologists
in a Global Age: Biographical Perspectives
(Ashgate 2007), in which sixteen leading international sociologists
share
their personal and professional experiences of becoming practitioners
in
the field. Providing fascinating insights into the careers of
sociologists
in a global age, the contributors provide auto-biographical reviews of
their respective journeys into the world of sociology. This book has been
translated into Chinese.
Throughout
my work on various substantive interests, I devote much attention to give adequate
theoretical expression
to the social structures and processes my empirical work is devoted to.
I also do work on, and value, sociological theory in and by itself.
Among
my publications on sociological theory are two edited volumes:
Sociological
Theory and Criminological Research (Elsevier 2006) and Habermas,
Modernity and Law (Sage 1996). The latter book is now also
available
in a Chinese edition. Related
theoretical
research projects involve several works on classical and contemporary
theories,
such as studies on Robert Merton's anomie theory and Simmel's influence
on the sociology of money.
As to
the form in which my
research is presented, I have not only published consistently, ever
since
my first article appeared in 1989, but I have also published very broadly in a number of different outlets, with different
audiences, in sociology, criminology and criminal justice, as well as
in
theory, history, and international studies. Thus, I seek my work to
reach
a broad audience rather than be narrowly confined. I hope this website
also contributes to that goal.
See
my Publications page for online copies of
my
academic writings.
