RESEARCH
& TEACHING FACILITIES
The
Sociology Department provides excellent facilities for its many
sociological research and teaching projects. Among them are, most
notably, the Sociological Research Laboratory, a Library, and
specially designed teaching classrooms. Click on an item below for
more information.
The
Laboratory for Sociological Research - Teaching
Facilities - Technology Instruction
The
USC Laboratory for Sociological Research
Sloan Hall houses the University of South
Carolina’s Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the
largest facilities of its type in the world. The Lab features:
- 16 small
computer-equipped subject rooms
- 8 portable
computerized work stations
- 4 control areas
- Group interaction room
with 1-way observation
- Audio and video
digital recording capabilities
This flexible space may be used for a wide variety of research and
teaching functions. Social interaction may be investigated
either through computerized networks or face-to-face groups. With
computer-mediated interaction, custom software allows subject
rooms to be configured into networks in which subjects may
participate in a variety of experimental games and tasks with
others. Such experimental networks may test for social
structural phenomena such as power, influence and cohesiveness, as
well as individual-level effects such as generosity,
trustworthiness, identity, and fairness.

Teaching
Facilities
All classrooms in Sloan College are
hardwired to the campus-wide computer network. In addition, four
smart classrooms, ranging in size from 20 to over 100 seats, are
designed to offer students and faculty maximum flexibility with
instructional technology.
- The auditorium in Sloan 112 seats over 100 students, and is
equipped to incorporate the full range of instructional
technologies, standard audio and visual components including
DVD, video slides, VCR, audio players, and a digital data
projector. The auditorium is also outfitted with interface
ports.
- Two mid-sized classrooms, Sloan 104 and 105, are outfitted
with computer teaching stations and interface with audio and
video capabilities.
- Sloan 109 is a small instructional facility with 20 student
computer workstations, and a fully outfitted teaching station,
wired into the campus network. The computer stations provide an
array of programs and capabilities needed to teach quantitative
classes from the beginning undergraduate level to advanced
graduate courses.

Technology Instruction
Office
of Information Technology - As part of the continuing effort to
focus on USC's core IT needs, Computer Services (CS) offers online
web-based training for a broad array of applications such as Excel,
Word, Access, and many more. USC's license for ElementK web-based
training includes several hundred online courses. Also, CS is
enhancing Help Desk support (777-1800) for students, faculty, and
staff by dedicating additional time from highly skilled technical
staff members. The Help Desk is transforming to a "one-stop
shop" where most questions can be answered on the phone without
being routed to another area for support. This will allow CS to
provide additional support for University initiatives such as
wireless, security (VPN and virus support), and Dell/Mac warranty
support for SLA customers.
