Summer sessions at the University of South Carolina provide students with unique, accelerated learning experiences. Through summer courses students have the opportunity to complete general education requirements, make timely progress toward their degree, and pursue educational opportunities not available during the academic year. The accelerated format of summer school allows for creative exploration of innovative topics. Students benefit from additional opportunities for cultural immersion, internships, directed research, and collaboration with faculty. Smaller class sizes and concentrated periods of study provide ideal learning conditions.

Our summer sessions offer distinctive learning experiences for students. Small classes, specialized topics, highly focused curricula, and a quiet campus give students the opportunity to enjoy a small college atmosphere without losing any of the advantages that come with a research university.

Summer is an ideal time to focus on challenging courses or broaden your horizons by taking something new. Our 2009 schedule offers a full range of introductory courses in the humanities, arts, social sciences, math, and sciences. Students can complete in one summer a full year of introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, or physics in two intensive sequential sessions. Maymester courses are specifically designed to encourage exploration of special topics not covered in the regular semester. Along with field and travel experiences, many courses explore critical issues through the lens of literature, popular culture, and film. The second summer session offers a number of courses geared towards incoming freshmen. With your placement scores in hand, you can fulfill prerequisites and clear your fall schedule for courses in your major. What better way to acclimate to campus and get a jump start on your university career.

We welcome visiting students from other colleges and universities, recent high school graduates, and adults seeking enrichment to join our students in the summer session. Our credits transfer easily to other colleges and universities.
