The Skin of Our Teeth
by Thornton Wilder
February 20 - March 1, 2009
Drayton Hall Theatre
Meet the absurdly comic Antrobus family, who amble from the dawn of mankind to the eve of destruction in this ground-breaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Thornton Wilder, the author of Our Town. As we see our heroes survive history’s calamities, we are reminded, in Wilder’s inimitable style, that throughout history mankind has essentially remained the same, always escaping catastrophe by “the skin of our teeth.”
Director Robert Richmond is bringing his playful and innovative touch to this American masterwork, with a keen focus on bringing out the classic text’s still very relevant themes. “Given our nation’s present economic disaster, the message of The Skin of Our Teeth is very timely indeed,” he says. “It is a play full of hope, and believes wholeheartedly in the tenacity of the human spirit. The play underlines that hardship and despair are necessary experiences in order to measure the virtues of humanity.”
