History & Women's Studies
The Ph.D. program in History
requires that its students select two minor fields in addition to a major
field. Each of the minor fields should consist of courses totaling 9 hours.
The list of possible minor fields includes both "gender studies" and "women's
history." There are no core requirements or suggested courses for these
minor fields; the student designs the minor in consultation with his or
her advisor. A minor in gender studies or women's history would provide
students with intensive training, a broadened perspective, and attractive
credentials. Given the growing demand for qualified teachers of women's
studies courses across the country, the certificate would enhance employment
prospects for new Ph.D.s. The following women's courses might be used to
complete one or both minor fields:
-
WOST 701 Feminist Theory
-
WOST 702 Issues and Methods in Women's Studies Research
-
WOST / GINT 704 Political Theory and Feminism WOST / GEOG 709 Women Explorers
and Travelers
-
WOST / ANTH 772 Gender and Culture
-
WOST 797 Seminar in Women's Studies
-
HIST 764 History of American Women
-
ENGL / WOST 737 British Women Writers
-
ENGL / WOST 738 American Women Writers
Additional courses are offered each semester as "topics" courses.
Programs
in both History and Women's Studies offer flexibility in course requirements, and you may be able
to earn the graduate certificate in Women's Studies with as little as three additional courses. You should consult the Graduate Director in Women's Studies (777-4009) and/or History to see how you could earn a degree in both areas most efficiently.
For a complete list of graduate courses see the Graduate Bulletin for Women's Studies.
